Nothing in the World but Youth exhibition

I woke this morning to various outraged tweets from fellow townsfolk of Margate at the tone and bare faced drivel that was passed off as a blog post by Tara Moore for Kent Life magazine.

Tara was dredging her depths about her recent visit to Margate and the Turner Contemporary. Not enough to moan she didn't like it. She had to moan she didn't like it being refitted for the next upcoming exhibition. Moaning about the cost of the building, she went on to moan about the cafe and shop being open. Make your mind up, love. Moaning about the shops that have opened in Margate. Not good enough for you? I hope she hasn't been paid for this effort. But you know what? Margate doesn't need her. Which brings me to the next exhibition to open on the 16th at Turner Contemporary. It promises to be great. If there is one thing that is close to Margate's heart it's youth culture. Out on a limb. Away days of freedom away from it all. More info as always on the Turner website.

 

 

Red - new exhibition at CRATE

A new exhibition at CRATE featuring Sculpture, Painting, Photography, Installation and Video.

RED brings together new works made in 2011 by Margate-based artists Tom Swift and Mark John Smith.

Private view: 19 March 2011 6PM – 9PM
Exhibition continues: 19, 20, 26, 27 March 11am – 5pm

RED aims to explore the interdependencies between: gallery – museum, location and place.

Although the works on show were conceived and produced separately, they share both a common aesthetic and conceptual approach.

Tom Swift’s practice relies on a ‘make and do’ ethos. The final works shown are a reduction of this process.

Mark John Smith’s practice is concerned with the juxtaposition of the ‘elite’ with the mundane. His sculptural works include essences from 1960’s Minimalism. These key historical aesthetic signifiers are then represented through the engagement and appropriation of utilitarian objects sourced from the everyday.

Margate Photofest Saturday 31st July & Sunday 1st August

Please see the attached flyer promoting Margate’s First Photographic Festival, exhibiting the work of professional and contemporary photographers which will be held on Saturday, 31 July and Sunday, 1 August from 11:00-17:00.

Venues are: The Community Pharmacy Gallery (Market Place), the Substation Project Space (Bilton Square), CRATE Galleries (1 and 2) (Bilton Square) and The Pie Factory (Broad Street).

The organisers are also in desperate need of volunteers to help look after the work during the show. Given that they have 5 venues they will need 25 people to watch the work. It is only a 3 hour shift and any one that helps will be invited to the private show.

Event - Tim Spencer exhibition, The Margate Harbour Arm Gallery, Saturday 5th of June

Digital photographer, TimSpencer, is showing a collection of recently worked images in a new exhibition entitled 'about MARGATE' - a series of pictorial representations based on observations made during the three years since he moved from London to Cliftonville.

This is a new perspective showing diverse elements of the beautiful area around Thanet. With a fresh vision, Timhas framed captured moments in that ever-changing relationship between the seemingly permanent and the ostensibly transient.

Tim was born in 1956 and moved from Sussex to London in 1975. Upon completing university and, after 2 years in video production, he joined a local newspaper group and then went on to work as a free-lance photographer for more than 20 years.

Amongst the professional commissions he accepted, Timtook photographs of Prime Minister Tony Blair, Rock legend Mick Jagger and Microsoft founder, Bill Gates.

"The advent of digital photography and computer-based processing couldn’t have come soon enough for me!" says Tim. "The efficiency, the capabilities and the working environment, when released from the dark-room, are fantastic."

Tim moved to Cliftonville in March 2007 and recorded his first year in and around Thanet through a daily photographic blog entitled 'new2margate'. Some of these images appear in the show.
