Lilley's Hotel Arcadian 1903 and 2010

Here's an old picture of what is now referred to as The Arcadian on Fort Hill when it was known as Lilley's Hotel Arcadian. The building now has a Compulsory Purchase Order from TDC on it as reported here:

Here is it is in 2010:

  2. Do you think it will be renovated or knocked down?

  3. It's becoming a Tesco Extra.

  4. I've just noticed that the Arcadian Hotel has been cordoned off for renovation / demolition, as has the car park at Arlington House!

  5. When I say "cordoned off" I mean they've put high metal fencing around them (sorry, should've explained better!). It looks as if the top level of the car park is still accessable, but not the lower levels. Does anyone know what's going on exactly?

  6. no way could there be a large tesco there. opposite a somewhat expensive landmark to be. The turner center ... Plus would be next to the police station.. I dont think the sea front could take the traffic in the summer for it..

  7. My Great Grandfather Frederick Adolphus Lilley owned this Hotel in 1897 and I have the documents which relate to it's sale in 1912. It is sad to see it in this state.

  9. They restore some original features which is rare and should be praised.

  10. I think the contractors are doing a fab job, the arcadian is looking absolutely fantastic and good to see part of Margate being restored to its former glory!!! Keep up the good work!

  11. what do you think to the plastic windows and the design of the balcony with metal columns and corrugated roof that aren't part of the planning permission agreed?

I saw the building about 3 weeks ago the plastic windows at the side which replaced some odd windows. I hope they have not replaced the wooden windows at the front.

Looking at 1903 pic you can see the intricate architectural detail. I would not say it’s restored to former glory.

  13. The building was an eyesore before, at least now it is starting to come together, if only something could be done with the fort hotel now!

  14. I think there is scaffolding around the fort.

  15. Fort hotel Iconic Margate building could be demolished if council fails to find buyer.

  16. They should demolish it anyway. It's looking a bit cramped & claustrophobic up there now, & this would give a much welcomed bit of space.

  17. But I think it's Georgian/regency and if one gets demolished more will follow.

  18. Also I think they will build on the land if demolish.

  19. Maybe they can convert it into a Tesco Extra? ; )

  20. A Tesco express is ok as long as they enhance the building and restore original features. I don’t think it will affect the cafes in the old town?

    But boutique hotel is better.

  21. Ive heard that the GNB(goliath national bank) is tearing it down for their new headquaters...is it true???

  22. @dominique: You are refering to the sitcom "How I Met Your Mother". It's just a tv show and not real. Maybe the producer refers to this building naming the hotel in the show "Arcadian. But all the circumstances, including GNB, are made up.
